Five free tools for your personal life

All free, all beginner-friendly. Pick the one you already have open.

1

ChatGPT

chatgpt.com

Best for goal planning, decision-making, writing letters, and general life questions. The free tier is more than enough to start.

2

Claude.ai

claude.ai

Strong for thinking through complicated personal situations. Calm, conversational, and good at nuance and complex reasoning.

3

Perplexity

perplexity.ai

Free and cites its sources. The best choice for health, finance, or life admin research you need to be able to verify.

4

Gemini

gemini.google.com

Works across Google apps and Android. Good for research, planning, and quick life questions when you are already in the Google ecosystem.

5

Microsoft Copilot

Built into Edge and Windows

Free if you already use Edge. Good for life admin, drafting letters, understanding documents, and general questions on the go.

One rule before you start: Do not paste your ID numbers, full account details, passwords, or medical record numbers into any AI tool. Keep your prompts useful without oversharing personal data.
The plain truth

What AI is actually good at in your personal life

Most people use AI for work. That makes sense, but it misses half the picture. The things that eat up the most mental energy are rarely work tasks. They are the messy personal stuff: figuring out how to get fitter and actually stay that way, deciding whether to move cities, understanding a medical bill, planning a trip, learning a new skill, or finally sorting out your finances.

AI is genuinely good at this. Not because it knows your life better than you do, but because it can help you think more clearly, lay out your options, and pull together information that used to take hours.

Think of AI as a well-read friend with no personal stake in your decisions. They can give you the information and help you think it through. The decision is always yours.

The most common mistake: Asking AI to tell you what to do. "Should I quit my job?" and "Is this symptom serious?" are not questions AI can answer for you. But "Help me think through the pros and cons of leaving my job" and "What questions should I ask my doctor about this?" are questions it handles well. Ask for help thinking, not for the answer.
Real-life use cases

Four ways to use AI in your personal life today

Each one includes a copy-paste prompt template ready to go.

1

Set a personal goal and build a real plan

Tell AI exactly what you want to achieve and what has gotten in the way before. Ask for a plan that fits your actual life, not the version of your life where you have unlimited time and energy.

Watch out: AI will build an ambitious plan by default. Ask it to cut the plan in half. A smaller, realistic plan you actually follow beats a perfect plan you abandon after two weeks.

"I want to [get fitter / save money / learn a skill / etc.]. My main obstacle is [what has stopped you before]. I have about [how much time per day or week] to put toward this. Can you build me a simple, realistic four-week starter plan? Make it easy enough that I will actually stick to it."
2

Research a health question without panicking

Use AI to understand health information clearly and prepare for a real conversation with your doctor. Not to diagnose. Not to replace medical advice. To walk into your appointment informed instead of confused.

Watch out: AI can get health information wrong and cannot examine you. If something feels urgent, see a doctor. Do not let a chatbot talk you out of getting something checked.

"I am trying to understand [symptom / diagnosis / medication / health topic]. I am not looking for a diagnosis. I just want to understand what this means in plain terms, and get a short list of questions to ask my doctor at my next appointment. Can you explain it simply and help me prepare?"
3

Think through a big personal decision

Move or stay. Change direction. Have a difficult conversation. Make a big purchase. You have been going in circles. Use AI to get your thinking out of your head and onto the page so you can see it more clearly.

Watch out: AI will present options logically but cannot feel the emotional weight of your situation. Use its output as a starting point for your own reflection, not as a conclusion.

"I am trying to make a decision about [describe the situation]. Here is what I am weighing: [key factors, what you want, what you are worried about]. I am not asking you to tell me what to do. Help me think it through by laying out the key considerations, flagging anything I might be missing, and asking me a few questions that might help me get clearer."
4

Handle life admin you keep putting off

A letter you need to write. A bill you need to understand. A plan you need to make. You keep avoiding it because you do not know where to start. Pick one thing and ask AI to help you begin.

Watch out: Do not share sensitive personal data. If the task involves private financial or legal details, keep your prompt general enough to be useful without oversharing.

"I need to [write a letter to / understand a bill from / plan / figure out how to] [brief description of the situation]. Can you help me get started? Give me either a first draft, a simple breakdown of steps, or both."
Try it now

A five-minute activity you can do today

You will need: ChatGPT free, Gemini, Claude.ai, or Perplexity. About five minutes.

What to notice: Did breaking the goal into a plan make it feel more or less possible? Did any part of the AI plan feel wrong for your actual life? That feeling is important. It means you know your situation better than the tool does. Trust that, and edit accordingly.
Always remember

Six rules for using AI in your personal life

The slow-down check: Before you act on what AI told you, ask yourself: "Is this a decision I should run by a real person first?" If the answer might be yes, do that first.
